A week of putting pollinators first

The worms have pledged to support the ‘Put Pollinators First’ campaign to raise awareness of the decline of insects and bees.

Here’s a quick summary of our pledge to support Gardener’s World’s #putpollinatorsfirst campaign, by drawing some cartoons. With 22million gardens in the UK, we can all do our bit – whether that’s planting some wild flower seeds, not using insecticides or making a new insect hotel

  • The area of all the uk’s 22 million gardens covers an area larger than the size of all the UK’s nature reserves. To insects our gardens are a haven – this cartoon is of two worms looking at a bee on a danedelion plant, one worm says, “Leave your dandelions to flower and deadhead them before they set seed.” the bee says, “ah, I’m in haven”

Without pollinators we would have fewer crops, relying on wind pollinated plants like oats, wheat etc... One worm says to the other, " I don't know what I'd do without my daily coffee?" With a panel of pollinator experts, committed to helping bees and other pollinating insects to thrive, Dr Trevor Dines says, ” Since the 1930’s, over 97 percent of our wildflower meadows have been destroyed. That’s 7.5 million acres, gone. Now you can understand why our pollinators are in such trouble.”

There are 3 ideas:

Sow some pollinator meadow seeds

Create habitats for butterflies, moths and caterpillars

Make a cornfield nectar bar

By making a meadow, even on a small scale, we can provide a banquet for pollinators that’ll help them to thrive.
