A week of putting pollinators first

The worms have pledged to support the ‘Put Pollinators First’ campaign to raise awareness of the decline of insects and bees.

Here’s a quick summary of our pledge to support Gardener’s World’s #putpollinatorsfirst campaign, by drawing some cartoons. With 22million gardens in the UK, we can all do our bit – whether that’s planting some wild flower seeds, not using insecticides or making a new insect hotel

  • The area of all the uk’s 22 million gardens covers an area larger than the size of all the UK’s nature reserves. To insects our gardens are a haven – this cartoon is of two worms looking at a bee on a danedelion plant, one worm says, “Leave your dandelions to flower and deadhead them before they set seed.” the bee says, “ah, I’m in haven”
  • gardening cartoon from the wrigglers about #putpollinatorsfirst - in this cartoon two worms are discussing the coffee granules in the compost bin. Without pollinators we would have fewer crops, relying on wind pollinated plants like oats, wheat etc... One worm says to the other, " I don't know what I'd do without my daily coffee?" The other worm replies, "be less jumpy?"
  • gardening cartoon from the wrigglers about #putpollinatorsfirst - if you paid all of the insects who pollinated our plants in the UK it would cost about 2 billion pounds. In this cartoon two worms are discussing the #putpollinatorsfirstcampaign to stop the decline of bees and insects in the UK. One bee is talking to the other worm. They are stood infant of a dandelion where a bee hovers. One worm says:”Who says it doesn’t pay to be a pollinator?” The other worm says,”it doesn’t, they do it for free”
  • gardening cartoon from the wrigglers about #putpollinatorsfirst - Each pollinator has a favourite plant, for example the hairy footed bumble bee likes the pulmonary, lungwort plant. In this cartoon one bee is talking to the other while looking at a lungwort plant with a hairy footed bee on it. One work says, “the pulmonary attracts the hairy footed bee” The other work says, “are you sure that’s not a hobbit bee?”
  • gardening cartoon from the wrigglers about #putpollinatorsfirst - Bees are best known for being pollinators, make them feel at home in your garden, build them a hotel to stay in … in this cartoon two worms are looking at a bee hotel. There is a bee sitting on its roof. One worm says, “ what’s that?” The bee answers, “it’s a hive star hotel”
  • gardening cartoon from the wrigglers about #putpollinatorsfirst - in this cartoon two worms are discussing the #putpollinatorsfirstcampaign to stop the decline of bees and insects in the UK. One bee is talking to the other worm, the worm talking has a bumble bee on its head, the worm say:”I’m showing my support”

Wild flower meadows flower for longer due to the diverse range of plants in them. That’s more flowers for you, and more food for the bees and insects. Plant one and join the Gardener’s World Put Pollinators First campaign – raising awareness of the decline of our pollinators @GWmagazine

With a panel of pollinator experts, committed to helping bees and other pollinating insects to thrive, Dr Trevor Dines says, ” Since the 1930’s, over 97 percent of our wildflower meadows have been destroyed. That’s 7.5 million acres, gone. Now you can understand why our pollinators are in such trouble.”

There are 3 ideas:

Sow some pollinator meadow seeds

Create habitats for butterflies, moths and caterpillars

Make a cornfield nectar bar

By making a meadow, even on a small scale, we can provide a banquet for pollinators that’ll help them to thrive.

Great advice and full of quick and simple tips too, for example … don’t cut into tender plants or evergreens right now as their top growth provides insulation from penetrating cold.
